According to the press release, the firm "does not anticipate a return to business but rather a managed wind-down of affairs, followed by a liquidation." That much was immediately clear, with a host of attorneys jumping ship from the more than 100-year-old firm, which had more than 1,000 attorneys at the time of the filing.

On average, in New York, partners charge nearly $500 more per hour than in Riverside, Calif., the cheapest law market.

Firms intending to open an office in the country include McDermott Will & Emery, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Paul Hastings, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, and Simpson Thacher & Barlett.
Former U.S. ambassador Robert Gelbard will join SNR Denton. Gelbard served as ambassador to Bolivia between 1988 and 1991 and ambassador to Indonesia from 1999 to 2001. The firm also hired a patent prosecution team formerly of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC. The team includes Martin Bruehs, Charles Bruton, and Scott Cummings. The three will work in Washington, D.C.

DLA Piper opened a new, 14-lawyer office in Mexico City. The firm hired United States and Japanese patent lawyer Stuart Lubitz to work in its Los Angeles office and hired Murray Procter to work in Brisbane, Australia. In its Reston, Va., office, the firm promoted Tara Lee to managing partner.

Tweet Share on Facebook February 7, 2012 CommentThe legal sector turned around its employment numbers in January, adding 1,000 jobs during the month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That makes up for a dire December, when employment fell by 1,100 jobs in the industry.
Morris, Manning & Martin hired three attorneys to work in its health care practice. Dan Mohan and Bill Boling will work in Atlanta, and John Northup will work in Savannah, Ga.
