For the first time since 2006, the number of women entering the nation's 200 largest law firms declined, according to a report by The National Association of Women Lawyers. Women make up 47 percent of first- and second-year associates, down from 48 percent in previous years.

Ousted Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno has retained a lawyer from King & Spalding as the university begins an internal investigation into actions the longtime coach took (or did not take) to report former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's alleged child molestation.

Keith McDole has left Jones Day to work at Kennedy, Clark & Williams, a boutique firm focusing on intellectual property law.

Jenner & Block has hired a team of six lawyers to work in its new media and entertainment practice in Los Angeles.

Proskauer has opened an office in Beijing. The firm also hired Andrew Bettwy and Glen Lim to work in its corporate law practice.

O'Melveny & Myers has partnered with Indonesian firm Tumbuan & Partners. They will work on cases in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo.

Covington & Burling has hired Arturo Valenzuela, a former State Department official, to help the firm expand their presence in Latin America.

Goodwin Procter partner Richard Strassberg was admitted to the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Dykema hired Alexis Schostak and Thomas Cleary. Schostak will work in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Cleary will work in Los Angeles.

Paul de Bernier has returned to Mayer Brown's Los Angeles office after spending several years in the firm's London office.

Perkins Coie opened an office in Taipei, Taiwan. The firm also hired Matthew Shebuski to work in its Chicago office.

DLA Piper's real estate practice was named the best in the nation by Commercial Property Executive magazine.

Volpe and Koenig has hired Marina Sigareva, an intellectual property lawyer who focuses on biotechnology and pharmaceutical patents.

William Yuen and Claire Wong Black have joined Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing.

Quarles & Brady promoted 14 lawyers in three offices (Chicago, Milwaukee, and Phoenix) to partner.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips has hired lobbyist Julie Minerva to work in its Washington, D.C. office.
