A new book released by the Brookings Institution argues that the deregulation of the law industry would lead to lower prices and improved service.

After spending more than 18 years in prison, the West Memphis Three was freed last week thanks to work from Ropes & Gray partner Stephen Braga. The three entered into an "Alford" plea, which allowed them to maintain their innocence in the slaying of three eight-year-old Cub Scouts in 1993. Recent DNA evidence suggested the men were not present at the scene of the crime.

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has appointed Kirkland & Ellis partner Dale Cendali to its board of directors. The organization defends comic book authors' First Amendment rights.

DLA Piper announced it was launching a pro bono fellowship program that will allow two new associates to spend their first year working on pro bono cases.

Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz has hired Edward Behm and Thomas McWilliams as partners in its Wilmington, Del. office. It has also hired Jennifer Bachorik as a technical advisor. She will work to expand the firm's biotechnology and plant science practice.

Goodwin Procter has hired Heidi Goldstein Shepherd as its chief human resources officer. She will oversee the firm's professional development and will focus on expanding the firm's women's, diversity, and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender initiatives.

Amy Manning, a partner at McGuireWoods, has been elected to the firm's executive committee.

Fox Rothschild gained three intellectual property lawyers after acquiring the Chan Law Group in Los Angeles.

Former acting U.S. solicitor general Neal Katyal is joining Hogan Lovells, according to The National Law Journal.

Fowler White Boggs will merge with 12-lawyer firm Atkinson, Diner, Stone, Mankuta & Ploucha early next year.
